Background
As a contestant for the 2025 International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), I wanted to capture the essence of this year's theme, "Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost!" The competition challenges designers like me to visually represent how composting can transform communities, no matter their size or location. I made sure to prominently display the theme, along with the key dates, May 4–10, 2025, since ICAW always takes place during the first full week of May.
The inspiration behind this year's theme came from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #11, which focuses on making cities and communities inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. In my design, I aimed to show how composting plays a role in that vision—whether in urban centers or rural landscapes. The poster emphasizes how composting reduces waste, supports local jobs, and revitalizes soil, benefiting everything from home gardens to large farms.
Composting helps communities manage their waste, reduce greenhouse gases, and foster healthier ecosystems. By visualizing compost’s impact on gardens, farms, and green spaces, I hoped to communicate its role in creating vibrant, sustainable communities.
