"War Art: A Closer Look into Propaganda Design" explores the intricate interplay between design, technology, and political ideology during conflict. It delves into design's persuasive power and sway over public sentiment, particularly from wartime propaganda.
My approach involves translating propaganda semiotics and cultural symbols into tangible forms, such as screen-printed posters on black paper using acrylic paint. I crafted stamps by scaling down the poster designs and laser-cutting them into soft linoleum blocks. I documented the culmination of these efforts, including the posters, their influences, the creative processes involved, and the ethical considerations, within my comprehensive online library.
I employ visually demanding messages inspired by past propaganda, symbolism, and technologies to convey reflective, post-modern narratives. I seek a delicate balance that provokes contemplation while acknowledging the gravity of the subjects. Ethical quandaries, such as appropriating historical imagery and manipulating public sentiment, are central themes in my expression of propaganda.
I explore three primary categories of propaganda design: movie production design, posters employing relevant technologies or aesthetics, and parody posters. These posters reflect significant ethical dilemmas and psychological impacts, encompassing fear, unity, and mobilization themes. I meld traditional design elements with modern technologies to create visually compelling content with a universal message.
